Work Statement
'Ties' is an ongoing photographic series by lens-based artist Erin-Grace, begun in October 2025. The project is based on the Channel Island of Sark and aims to create a body of work that reflects both the island’s landscape and its community.
The project is inspired by Erin-Grace’s personal connection to Sark. Her grandfather moved to the island in the 1950s after marrying a Channel Island woman (her grandmother), and he became the island’s photographer. Erin-Grace wanted to investigate why her grandfather chose to remain on Sark until his death, particularly following the dissolution of his marriage to her grandmother. Having never met her grandfather, ‘Ties' became a way for the artist to both understand his attachment to Sark and establish her own relationship to the place.
This has resulted in a body of work that focuses on the people who make up the island and its rugged yet beautiful landscape, qualities the artist believes may explain why her grandfather never left.
